Thermocopy Honored With Prestigious Environmental Award

Thermocopy, East Tennessee’s largest business technology company, was presented with the 2008 Environmental Achievement Award at the annual Keep Knoxville Beautiful Orchids and Onions Awards Banquet on October 9, 2008.

Keep Knoxville Beautiful recognized Thermocopy with the 2008 Environmental Achievement Award for Outstanding Achievement By A Large Business based on both internal efforts and community involvement. Thermocopy’s leadership and employees have developed an ongoing, internal program called Greenworks, which includes initatives such as creating a company-wide recycling program, switching to 30% post-consumer recycled paper for all internal documents, installing programmable thermostats and switching to green cleaning with an eco-friendly janitorial service. Their website at www.ThermocopyGreenworks.com features the Thermocopy Environmental Sustainability Plan, helpful information for customers, and detailed, monthly results of their environmental efforts (over 69,000 lbs. of paper, e-scrap and other materials have been recycled through September 2008). Thermocopy also offers clients a print management strategy called Printworks that includes a customized Environmental Impact Assessment. Printworks combines hardware, supplies, service and other things tailored to workflow in a way that saves money and can help reduce landfill waste, energy usage, and the amount of paper used.

Another Thermocopy effort was the concept creation, co-development and co-sponsorship of the Business in the Green contest administered by the Greater Knoxville Business Journal (a GoGreenET.com Media Partner). This contest awarded $20,000 to the business that was judged to have submitted the “go green” business plan that would net the most favorable impact on the environment. There were over 60 applicants in the first year of this contest.

Along with other area business partners, Thermocopy also helped to create GoGreenET.com — a free, online resource created to help East Tennessee businesses and other organizations become more environmentally responsible. The GoGreenET.com directory provides basic information about products and services that can help regional businesses improve their impact on the environment. To date, Founding and Media Partners have generously committed over $500,000 of marketing and media publicity for the website.

J. Mark DeNicola, CFO and Executive Director of Sales and Marketing of Thermocopy, said, “As part of an ongoing effort to strengthen our corporate commitment to be an environmentally responsible business partner, Thermocopy is not only pursuing innovative new ways our company can reduce, reuse, recycle and renew the resources we consume while doing business but also providing resources to other East Tennessee businesses to help them meet their goals to go green. Taking care of the environment makes good business sense.”

Keep Knoxville Beautiful presents the Environmental Achievement Award annually to a Knox County company that has implemented recycling or cleanup efforts that have resulted in community and/or economic development, contributed time and energy for the good of the community rather than personal gain, is a model of creativity, hard work, leadership, unity, motivation, openness, integrity, and love for the community and has had a major positive impact on the environment in the Knoxville/Knox County area. The Environmental Achievement Awards are sponsored by Waste Connections of Tennessee and Advanced Polymer Recycling. Past winners of this award include KUB, TVA Solid Waste Reduction Division, Scripps Networks, and the Safety & Ecology Corporation.
